Adult Forum: Make Me An Instrument of Your Peace

October 15, 2023 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every 5 weeks that begins at 11:00 am on Sunday, repeating indefinitely

How many of us have ever prayed, ‘Lord make me an instrument of your peace,’ then found ourselves in complex and polarized situations that made peace seem impossible? Would you like to learn effective strategies that can be applied with your friends, family, work, SPW and our world? If so, please join Adult Faith beginning on October 15 at 11:00am as we host Make Me an Instrument: A Guide to Civil Discourse.

Designed by The Episcopal Church’s Office of Government Relations and its Department of Faith Formation, Make Me an Instrument is a free, 5-week video based course designed to help us bridge the divides that keep us from moving forward. The instructors come from a variety of traditions, mostly mainline Christianity – Baptist, Episcopal, Methodist, Presbyterian. They meet two criteria: 1) they are well-studied, even experts, in their fields, 2) they offer a moderate viewpoint.

If you have been interested in joining the Adult Forum in the past, but don’t have a lot of extra time in your schedule, you might consider joining this time! There is no pre-work or homework required. Join us from 11:00-12:00 and we will watch 3-6 short video lectures that are from 5-7 minutes in length. We will discuss the videos and explore strategies that will help us to effectively dialogue between polarized people or parties to truly become an instrument of peace.

The five classes are:

Civil Discourse in Context with Ranjit Matthews
Tenets for Civil Discourse with Shannon Kelly
Values-Based Conversations with Alan Yarborough
The Complexities of Policy with Rebecca Linder Blachy
Sacred Space for Debate with Marcus Halley
